Each edition of the IntegrityStar features an actual investigation conducted by the investigative offices here at UCF (note, all names have been changed in an effort to provide confidentiality of the parties involved). This edition covers an investigation highlighting 2-701 Drug-Free Schools and Workplace Policy.
Background
An anonymous employee submitted a report to the UCF IntegrityLine alleging that an instructor was drinking excessively while attending academic related conferences. Faculty and students attended these conferences, and it appeared that the instructor was drinking excessively in the evenings. The anonymous employee was concerned that this behavior could put the instructor, the students, and ultimately the university at risk. University Compliance and Ethics conducted an investigation.
Findings
Investigators substantiated that the instructor violated university policy 2-701 Drug-Free Schools and Workplace Policy and sections of the UCF Employee Code of Conduct. The alcohol impairment resulted in the instructor making poor choices and engaging in risky behaviors that impacted UCF students. Even though it is allowable to attend after hour social events, which may involve alcohol while attending conferences, employees are still representing UCF and are expected to conduct themselves responsibly and to be accountable for their actions while engaging with UCF students and employees.
Recommendations
As a result of the substantiated findings, University Compliance and Ethics recommended that leadership evaluate appropriate disciplinary action in consultation with relevant university offices. The instructor was also provided with resources including the UCF Employee Assistance Program.
We appreciate the employee who identified this as an issue and felt comfortable enough to bring it forward to the UCF IntegrityLine allowing the university the opportunity to address the issue.
If you become aware of a situation that you believe is not in accordance with UCF regulations, policies, procedures, or standards of conduct, please report it through the available reporting mechanisms or submit a report through the UCF IntegrityLine.
